Frequently Asked Questions About Writing, Editing And Publishing A Book
Clear answers drawn from our service guides. Each answer links to the full page if you want more detail.
General Questions
Is it normal to hire a professional writer for my book?
Yes. Publishers, executives and public figures have worked with professional writers for generations. You provide the ideas, experiences and final approval, while the writer handles drafting. Many authors also thank their writer in the acknowledgments, and that choice is entirely yours.
How much does it cost to have a book written professionally?
The price depends on word count, research needs, genre and the level of editing you want. After a short call we send a written quote that itemises each stage, so you know the full cost before work begins.
How long does a professionally written book take?
Most projects run between three and six months from the first call to a finished manuscript. Longer books, heavy research and slower feedback rounds extend that, while a short book can be finished sooner.
Who owns the copyright and royalties?
You do. Copyright passes to you when the final payment is made, and we never take a share of royalties. Your book is published under your own retailer accounts, so earnings go directly to you.
Can you help if I have already written part of my book?
Yes. We can continue your draft, restructure it, edit it or simply proofread and format it. Send what you have and we will recommend the smallest amount of work that gets it to publishing standard.
Which services can I buy on their own?
Every service is available separately: editing, proofreading, formatting, translation, cover design, an author website, audiobook production, publishing setup and marketing support.
Book Writing
How much does it cost to have a book written for you?
Cost depends mainly on word count, research needed, and turnaround time. A short guide costs far less than a 70,000-word memoir. We give a fixed quote after the discovery call, based on your plan, so you know the full figure before work begins and never face surprise charges. More on Book Writing
Will my name be on the book?
Yes. As the commissioning author, you are the credited author. We take no byline, and you can choose whether to mention a collaborator in the acknowledgments. The contract states in writing that you own the manuscript and all rights in it once the work is delivered. More on Book Writing
How long does it take to write a book?
Most full-length books take four to nine months from discovery call to final manuscript. Shorter books can finish in two to three months. The biggest variable is how quickly you review chapters and answer questions, so a responsive author usually finishes sooner than the estimate. More on Book Writing
Can you write in my voice if I have never written anything?
Yes. Your writer works from recorded interviews and your own words, not from your writing history. Sample pages let you check the voice before the full draft begins, and we keep adjusting until the pages sound like you speaking on a good day. More on Book Writing
Do you also edit, design, and publish the book?
We do. After the manuscript is approved, it can go through editing, proofreading, interior formatting, cover design, and publishing on major platforms. You can use any or all of these services, or take your finished files elsewhere. Nothing about the writing contract forces you to continue with us. More on Book Writing
What is the difference between non-fiction and fiction writing services?
Non-fiction writing deals with real facts, expertise, and arguments, so it needs research, source tracking, and a clear reader outcome. Fiction invents characters and plots. A non-fiction writer organizes your real knowledge and checks claims, while a fiction writer builds a story world from imagination. More on Non-Fiction Writing
Can you write a non-fiction book if I only have notes and ideas?
Yes. Many clients arrive with scattered notes, slide decks, or recorded talks. Your writer reads everything, interviews you to fill gaps, and builds the outline. Rough material is a perfectly good starting point, and it often means the book will sound more like you. More on Non-Fiction Writing
Do you do the research for the book?
Your writer does desk research to support your claims and finds credible published sources, which you then confirm. We do not fabricate data or quotes. If a chapter needs original interviews or surveys, we discuss that scope separately because it changes timeline and cost. More on Non-Fiction Writing
How long should a non-fiction book be?
Most business and self-help books run between 40,000 and 60,000 words, though a focused guide of 25,000 to 35,000 words is common and perfectly viable. Academic or highly technical books may run longer. We recommend a length based on your reader and your goal. More on Non-Fiction Writing
Will the book help my business or career?
A strong book can support credibility, speaking opportunities, and client conversations, but we cannot promise sales, rankings, or particular results. What we can promise is a clear, accurate manuscript that represents you well and gives readers real value. Honest expectations help. More on Non-Fiction Writing
What is the difference between a memoir and a biography?
A memoir is a first-person account of a particular part of your own life, organized by theme. A biography is written in the third person about a subject's whole life or career. Memoirs are more personal and flexible. Biographies depend more heavily on outside research and verification. More on Biography Writing
How many interview sessions are needed?
Most memoirs need between six and twelve interview sessions of about an hour each, spread over several weeks. Shorter family keepsake books may need fewer. We keep the sessions flexible and record them so nothing is lost, and we follow up by email for small details. More on Biography Writing
Can you write a biography of someone who has died?
Yes. We rely on family interviews, letters, photographs, public records, and any recordings that exist. The result is necessarily built from other people's memories, so we are careful to mark what is documented and what is recollection. Families often review drafts together before approving them. More on Biography Writing
How do you handle private or painful events?
Carefully and only with your direction. You decide what to include, soften, or leave out. We flag passages involving other living people, since privacy and defamation risks can arise. For difficult subjects we work at your pace, and you can pause or step back at any stage. More on Biography Writing
Who owns the biography when it is finished?
You do. The manuscript and all rights belong to the client, and you are the credited author of a memoir. For biographies of another person, credit and rights are agreed in writing at the start. An NDA is available, and nothing is shared or reused without your permission. More on Biography Writing
How much research is included in history writing?
Research is a core part of the work, but its depth depends on your scope. We use your materials plus public archives, newspapers, and records. If a project needs travel to distant archives or paid record searches, we discuss that separately so the budget is clear from the start. More on History Writing
How long does a history book take to write?
A 30,000 to 50,000-word family or local history usually takes four to seven months including research. Larger corporate or academic-style histories can take eight to twelve months. Access to documents and your speed in checking facts are the main factors affecting the schedule. More on History Writing
Can you write a family history from old letters and photos?
Yes. That is a very common project. We transcribe and organize the letters, identify the people and places in photographs where possible, interview relatives, and fill gaps from public records. The result is a narrative book with the original materials worked into it. More on History Writing
Will the book include citations and sources?
Yes. We provide footnotes or endnotes in Chicago style, a bibliography, and a source log. For general-audience family books, we can reduce visible citations while keeping the full record for your files. Either way, every significant claim is traceable to evidence. More on History Writing
What if the research reveals uncomfortable facts?
We tell you and discuss how to handle them. History is not always flattering, and we will not conceal or invent facts. You decide what appears in the finished book, but we advise on accuracy, on the privacy of living people, and on legal risks of publishing certain claims. More on History Writing
How much does it cost to have a novel written?
Price is driven chiefly by word count and the amount of planning required. An 80,000-word novel costs more than a 50,000-word novella, and a complex plot costs more than a simple one. After a story consultation we provide a fixed quote, so you know the total before the work starts. More on Novel Writing
How long does it take to write a novel for someone?
Most novels take five to ten months from outline approval to final manuscript. Shorter works, such as novellas, can be done in three to four months. Your response time on chapters is the biggest variable, so a quick reviewer usually finishes well ahead of the estimate. More on Novel Writing
Will I be credited as the author of the novel?
Yes. As the client you are the sole credited author and you own all rights in the work. The writer takes no credit and no royalties. The contract states this clearly before drafting begins, and an NDA is available to protect your idea from the start. More on Novel Writing
Can you continue a novel I have already started?
Yes. We read what you have, assess the structure and voice, and tell you honestly whether to continue, revise, or restart. Then the writer extends the draft to completion in a matching voice. Many clients bring us a partial manuscript for exactly this reason. More on Novel Writing
Do you write in specific genres like romance or fantasy?
We do. Genre readers have strong expectations, so we match you with a writer who works in your genre. Dedicated pages on this site cover romance, fantasy, mystery, thriller, horror, and science fiction, if you want to see how each is handled. More on Novel Writing
How long should a children's picture book be?
Most picture books run about 32 pages, with a text length of roughly 500 to 600 words, and often fewer. The illustrations carry much of the story. If your draft is longer, we help you cut it while keeping the characters, humor, and heart that make it work. More on Children's Book Writing
Can you write a children's book from my idea?
Yes. You tell us the idea, the age group, and any message or character you have in mind, and the writer builds the story. You approve an outline first, then a full draft. Many clients begin with a single sentence or a bedtime story told aloud. More on Children's Book Writing
Do you provide illustrations?
We write the text, and we can connect you with illustration and design services through our team. Illustration is a separate project with its own cost and timeline. If you already have an illustrator, we format and deliver the text so it is easy for them to work from. More on Children's Book Writing
How long does it take to write a children's book?
A picture book manuscript usually takes two to four weeks including one revision round. A chapter book takes six to ten weeks, and a middle-grade novel takes three to six months. Illustration and layout add time after the text is complete, and we outline that schedule early. More on Children's Book Writing
Will I own the rights to my children's story?
Yes. You own the text and all rights in it, and we claim no credit or share of income. The agreement states this plainly. If you later work with an illustrator, their rights to the artwork are handled in a separate agreement between you and them. More on Children's Book Writing
Can you write a poem from my personal memories?
Yes. That is the most common request. You share names, places, and moments, and the poet turns them into images rather than a list. You approve the tone first, and we revise until the poem sounds right when you read it aloud, which is the real test. More on Poetry Writing
How long does it take to write a poem or a collection?
A single commissioned poem is normally ready in three to seven days. A collection of 40 to 60 poems usually takes two to four months, depending on how closely you work with the poet. Rush requests are possible for short pieces, and we confirm what is realistic. More on Poetry Writing
Do I own the copyright on poems you write for me?
Yes. Once the work is delivered, you own all rights, and you can publish, perform, or reproduce the poems under your own name. The agreement says so plainly, and we never reuse or resell poems written for you, including for similar occasions. More on Poetry Writing
Can you help me finish or improve my own poems?
Yes. We can edit your poems for rhythm, imagery, and line breaks without stripping out your voice. We also tell you honestly which pieces are strongest and which need more work. Where you want new poems to match your style, the poet studies your existing work first. More on Poetry Writing
Will a poetry collection make money?
Rarely, and we say so up front. Poetry sells in small numbers for most poets, and we promise no sales or awards. Collections are often published to share with readers, for readings, or to build a literary record. We can help you publish in a way that fits those goals. More on Poetry Writing
How much does a custom speech cost?
Cost depends on length, the amount of research involved, and how fast you need it. A five-minute toast costs far less than a 30-minute keynote with audience-specific material. After a short briefing we send a fixed quote, so the full price is clear before any writing begins. More on Speech Writing
How long does it take to get a speech written?
A short speech can often be ready within a few days. Longer keynotes, or speeches needing research, usually take one to three weeks including revision. Tell us your event date at the start and we will confirm whether the timeline is realistic or whether we should prioritize. More on Speech Writing
Will the speech sound like me?
That is the goal. We interview you, review recordings of your natural speech, and write sentences you would say. You read the draft aloud, mark anything that sounds stiff, and we revise until it fits comfortably. Most clients need only a small number of adjustments. More on Speech Writing
Can you write a eulogy or a wedding toast?
Yes. Personal speeches are among the most common requests. You share memories, names, and details, and the writer arranges them with warmth and restraint. We treat these projects with care and will tell you honestly if a draft needs a different tone before you use it. More on Speech Writing
Is my speech confidential, and do I own it?
Yes to both. The final text is yours to use, share, or publish as you wish, and an NDA is available before you send any material. We never reuse drafts for other clients, and no one is credited as the writer unless you ask us to do so. More on Speech Writing
What types of scripts do you write?
We write explainer videos, corporate and training films, YouTube and social video, podcasts, audio dramas, commercials, web series, and television pilots. Feature films and stage plays have their own pages and specialist writers. If you are unsure which format fits, describe the project and we will recommend one. More on Script Writing
How long does it take to get a script written?
A short video or podcast script can be ready within three to seven days. A longer corporate script may take two weeks, and a television pilot generally takes four to eight weeks including revision. We confirm a schedule once we know your running time and how quickly you can give feedback. More on Script Writing
Can you write to a specific running time?
Yes. We calculate word count against typical speaking pace, roughly 130 to 150 words a minute, and adjust for visuals, pauses, and music. If the material you want to cover cannot fit your time slot, we say so early and suggest what to trim or split. More on Script Writing
Do I own the script after you deliver it?
Yes. You own the final script and all rights in it. We do not claim credit or keep any usage rights. An NDA is available before you share a concept, and we never reuse your material for other clients or projects. More on Script Writing
What is the difference between script writing and movie writing?
Script writing covers many formats, including video, audio, commercials, and television. Movie writing refers specifically to feature-length screenplays of 90 to 120 pages. If you are making a feature film, our movie writing team is the better fit, and the two teams work closely together. More on Script Writing
How long does it take to write a feature screenplay?
A feature screenplay typically takes eight to fourteen weeks from concept approval to final draft, depending on length, genre, and how quickly you give feedback. A logline and beat sheet alone can be ready in two to three weeks. We confirm a schedule after the development call. More on Movie Writing
Will I own the rights to my movie script?
Yes. You own the screenplay outright, along with all underlying rights, and we claim no credit, ownership, or share of any future income. The agreement states this in writing before work begins, and an NDA is available so your concept stays private throughout development. More on Movie Writing
Can you turn my book into a screenplay?
Yes. Adaptation is a common request. The writer reads your book, identifies the story that works on screen, and restructures it into scenes. Expect some cuts and combined characters, because a 90,000-word novel cannot fit unchanged into a 100-page script. You approve the approach first. More on Movie Writing
Can you guarantee my script will be sold or produced?
No, and no honest writer can. Selling a screenplay depends on the market, contacts, timing, and luck. We promise a professionally written, correctly formatted script, a clear pitch package, and honest advice about the next steps you might take. Be wary of those who do. More on Movie Writing
Do you write short films and treatments too?
We do. Short film scripts, treatments, series pitches, and one-page synopses are available as separate projects. If you start with a short film and later want to expand it into a feature, the original story knowledge carries over, which usually saves time. More on Movie Writing
What is the difference between drama and screenplay writing?
Drama is a genre and also a broad term for scripted performance, including stage and radio. Screenplays are written for film. Stage scripts depend on dialogue and limited settings, while screenplays are visual and can move freely. We match your project to a writer experienced in the right medium. More on Drama Writing
How long does it take to write a stage play?
A one-act play usually takes four to six weeks, and a full-length play takes eight to fourteen weeks including a revision after a reading. Television drama scripts follow a similar range for a single episode. We confirm a schedule once the premise and format are settled. More on Drama Writing
Can you write drama based on a true story?
Yes. We work from your account and from documents you provide, and we advise on fictionalizing names or events to avoid legal problems, especially when real, living people are involved. Dramatic compression of events is normal, but we flag where facts are being changed so you decide. More on Drama Writing
Will I own the play or series idea?
Yes. You own the script and every right in it, including performance and adaptation rights. We take no credit or share. An NDA can be signed before you share your idea, and we do not reuse characters, plots, or dialogue from one client's project in another. More on Drama Writing
Do you help get plays produced or published?
We cannot promise a production, because that depends on theaters and funding. We can format the script professionally, write a synopsis and cover letter, and advise on festivals, competitions, and publishers of play scripts. Many first productions come from short-play festivals rather than major houses. More on Drama Writing
Can anyone get a Wikipedia page written?
No. A subject needs significant coverage in independent, reliable sources to qualify. If you have only your own website, press releases, or passing mentions, an article will likely be rejected or deleted. We check notability first and tell you honestly whether it is worth proceeding. More on Wikipedia Writing
Can you guarantee the page will be approved and stay live?
No. Volunteer editors review every submission independently, and pages can be declined, edited, or nominated for deletion at any time. We promise a compliant, neutral, well-sourced draft and honest advice, but the final outcome rests with the Wikipedia community, not with us. More on Wikipedia Writing
Is paying for a Wikipedia article allowed?
Paid editing is allowed only with proper disclosure. The Wikimedia terms of use require paid editors to declare their employer, client, and affiliation. We follow that rule on every project and refuse work that would require hiding it, using fake accounts, or bypassing review. More on Wikipedia Writing
Can I control what the article says?
Not entirely. Wikipedia articles must follow a neutral point of view and reflect what reliable sources say. You can correct factual errors and suggest sources, but you cannot require flattering language or remove well-sourced facts. That neutrality is exactly what gives the page credibility. More on Wikipedia Writing
How long does the Wikipedia process take?
Preparing the assessment and draft usually takes one to three weeks. Community review after submission can take several weeks to a few months, depending on the volunteer queue. We keep you informed throughout and handle reasonable reviewer requests as they come in. More on Wikipedia Writing
Fiction Writing
What is fiction writing?
Fiction writing services mean a professional writer drafts your novel while you are credited as the author. You supply the idea, direction and approvals, and the writer drafts the text in your voice. It is a long-standing practice in commercial fiction, and the rights to the finished work belong to you. More on Fiction Writing
Which fiction genres do you cover?
We cover adventure, fantasy, horror, romance, science fiction, action, suspense and thriller, mystery and crime, and comic book scripts. Each has its own page explaining conventions and process. If your story blends genres, we help you choose a primary shelf and write to its expectations. More on Fiction Writing
Can I write part of the book myself?
Yes. Some clients write their own opening chapters or key scenes and ask us to draft the rest, and we match your voice from those pages. Others develop the plot with us on calls. How much you contribute is up to you, and we adapt the process. More on Fiction Writing
Do you write standalone books and series?
Both. We can write a single novel or plan and draft a multi-book series with one writer for consistency. For series we maintain a story bible. We work one volume at a time, so you review each book before committing to the next. More on Fiction Writing
How do you protect my story idea?
We sign an NDA before you share details if you request one, limit access to the writer and project manager, and never reuse your material. All rights transfer to you on delivery. You are the only credited author unless you choose to credit us. More on Fiction Writing
How long is an adventure novel?
Most adult adventure novels run 70,000 to 100,000 words, which is roughly 250 to 350 printed pages. Middle-grade adventure is shorter, usually 40,000 to 55,000 words. We agree a target length with you at the outline stage so the plot is sized to the page count from the start, not squeezed or padded later. More on Adventure Writing
Can you write an adventure story based on my real expedition?
Yes. Many clients bring a true trip, a family story or a military posting and want it fictionalized or told as narrative. We can change names, compress timelines and invent scenes, or stay close to the facts. You tell us how far to depart from reality, and we keep to that line. More on Adventure Writing
Do you handle research for unfamiliar locations?
Yes. Your writer checks terrain, weather, travel times, local customs and equipment so the setting stands up to readers who know the place. If the location is invented, we build a consistent map and timeline instead. Anything uncertain is flagged to you in the margins rather than guessed quietly. More on Adventure Writing
Will my name be the only one on the book?
Yes. You are the credited author and you hold all rights once the work is delivered and paid for. We do not publish or reuse your manuscript. An NDA can be signed before you share your idea, and an acknowledgment to us appears only if you choose to add one. More on Adventure Writing
Can you write adventure books for kids as well as adults?
Yes. We write middle-grade and young adult adventure as well as adult fiction. Younger books use shorter chapters, clearer goals and gentler peril, while adult adventure can carry grimmer stakes and longer set pieces. Tell us the reader age and we set vocabulary, length and content accordingly. More on Adventure Writing
How long does it take to write a fantasy novel?
A full-length fantasy of 90,000 to 120,000 words usually takes several months from approved outline to final draft, depending on length and revision rounds. A longer worldbuilding phase adds time up front but saves it later. We give you a schedule after reviewing your premise, with milestones for each batch of chapters. More on Fantasy Writing
Can you continue my half-finished fantasy manuscript?
Yes. Send what you have, plus notes on where the story is going. We read the existing chapters, match your voice, flag plot holes, and outline the remaining chapters for your approval before we write them. Your original text stays as written unless you ask us to revise it. More on Fantasy Writing
Will you invent the magic system for me?
If you want us to, yes. We propose a system with clear costs, limits and consequences, then you approve or reshape it. If you already have rules, we follow them exactly. Either way the system is written down in the world bible so it stays consistent from the first chapter to the last. More on Fantasy Writing
Do I own the characters and world you help create?
Yes. All characters, settings, languages and lore developed during the project transfer to you on delivery and payment. We keep no rights and do not reuse your material. This matters for sequels, audiobooks, games and film options, and it is covered in the agreement we sign before work begins. More on Fantasy Writing
Can you write young adult fantasy?
Yes. Young adult fantasy typically runs 80,000 to 100,000 words, with teen protagonists, personal stakes and fast chapters. We keep violence and romance at the level you specify and avoid adult themes if you ask. Share a comparable title and we will match its tone and pacing. More on Fantasy Writing
How long should a horror novel be?
Most horror novels run 60,000 to 90,000 words. Novellas of 30,000 to 50,000 words are common and work well for single-location or single-threat stories. We recommend a length based on your premise, since a thin idea stretched to 90,000 words loses tension, while a layered one may need the room. More on Horror Writing
Can you write horror without extreme gore?
Yes. Quiet horror, ghost stories and psychological dread rely on atmosphere and implication, not graphic violence. Tell us your content limits for gore, language, sexual content and disturbing subjects, and we write to them. You can also ask for a harder edge. The intensity is yours to control. More on Horror Writing
Will you make my horror idea different from existing books?
We read widely in the genre and tell you honestly where your premise overlaps with well-known work. Then we look for the specific angle, character or setting that makes it yours. Familiar tropes are fine when handled with a fresh point of view, and we point out where yours is strongest. More on Horror Writing
Do you write horror short stories or only novels?
We write both. Short stories, linked collections, novellas and full novels are all possible. Collections need a unifying theme or setting so they read as one book. Send the concepts you have and we recommend a format, then agree length and number of pieces before writing begins. More on Horror Writing
Can I keep my horror story confidential until publication?
Yes. We sign an NDA on request before you share any details, and we never publish, sell or reuse your manuscript. Drafts are shared only with you. You are the sole credited author unless you choose otherwise, and the rights transfer to you when the work is delivered. More on Horror Writing
How long is a romance novel?
Category romance usually runs 50,000 to 55,000 words, while most contemporary and historical single titles run 70,000 to 90,000. Series novellas can be 25,000 to 40,000. We agree a target length at the outline stage, matching the market you plan to publish in, so the book fits reader and retailer expectations. More on Romance Writing
Can you write steamy or clean romance?
Both. We write sweet, closed-door, steamy and explicit romance, and we set the level in the brief. Explicit content must stay within the rules of the platform you plan to publish on. Give us a comparable author and we calibrate language, detail and tone to match what your readers already enjoy. More on Romance Writing
Will my readers be able to tell someone else wrote it?
That is what voice matching is for. We study your earlier books, newsletters or recordings, then copy your pacing, humor and narrative style. You approve the first chapters before the rest is written, and we adjust until the text reads like you. Most of the work happens at that stage. More on Romance Writing
Can you write an entire romance series for me?
Yes. We plan the full series arc, maintain a bible of characters and places, and deliver books on an agreed schedule. You can use one writer throughout for consistency. We take on one volume at a time, so you can review each release before committing to the next. More on Romance Writing
Do you write LGBTQ+ and diverse romance?
Yes. We write romance with LGBTQ+ leads and diverse backgrounds, and we match the writer to the material. Tell us about your characters and any cultural details you want handled with care. For sensitive subjects, we can flag points for your own review or an outside reader before publication. More on Romance Writing
How long is a typical science fiction novel?
Most science fiction novels run 80,000 to 110,000 words, with space opera and epic series openers sometimes longer. Debut novels near the lower end are easier to place with readers and agents. We recommend a length once we know the scope of your plot, then hold to it through outline and drafting. More on Science Fiction Writing
Can you write hard science fiction with accurate science?
Yes, within reason. Your writer researches the underlying physics, biology or engineering and checks the plot against it. Where the story has to bend a rule, we mark the departure so you can decide whether to keep it. We are not a lab, so for specialist claims we suggest an expert read. More on Science Fiction Writing
Do you write dystopian and post-apocalyptic fiction?
Yes. These stories need a credible collapse or control mechanism and a protagonist with something to lose. We build the social rules, the survival constraints and the central pressure early, so the plot grows from the setting rather than dropping characters into scenery. More on Science Fiction Writing
Can you adapt my screenplay or game setting into a novel?
Yes. Adapting a script or game world means converting visual beats into interior thought, description and pacing a reader can follow. We keep your core plot and characters, expand them where prose needs it, and cut scenes that only worked on screen. You approve the adaptation outline first. More on Science Fiction Writing
What if my science fiction idea resembles an existing book?
Overlap is common, because the genre revisits themes such as first contact and artificial minds. We tell you honestly where your premise echoes known works and help sharpen what makes yours different. A new angle, setting or character usually matters more than a wholly unprecedented concept. More on Science Fiction Writing
How long is an action novel?
Most action novels run 70,000 to 90,000 words, which is typically 60 to 80 short chapters. The form favors tight, forward-driving storytelling over long description. We agree a target with you at outline stage and design the number and size of set pieces to fit it. More on Action Writing
What is the difference between action and thriller writing?
Action fiction is driven by physical confrontation and movement, while thrillers rely on suspense, secrecy and a looming threat. Many books blend both. We ask which side dominates in your concept, then pick pacing, chapter length and tone accordingly. That also helps you choose the right category when you publish. More on Action Writing
Can you write realistic military or combat scenes?
Yes. Your writer researches tactics, equipment, terminology and chain of command for your setting. If you have service experience, we use your notes to verify details. We avoid technical instructions that go beyond what fiction needs, and keep everything focused on story, tension and character. More on Action Writing
Will you write action scenes in my existing series voice?
Yes. Send earlier books and we study how you describe movement, handle violence and use humor. We match sentence length and tone, then share early chapters for approval. If your series has recurring phrases or rules, we record them in a style sheet for the entire project. More on Action Writing
Can you write a comic or screenplay version of my action story?
We can. Our comic book and script services handle visual adaptation, converting prose set pieces into panels or scene pages. Planning for it early helps, because sequences written for the page can be shaped to translate. Ask us about combining services when you describe your project. More on Action Writing
How long should a thriller be?
Most thrillers run 70,000 to 90,000 words, with chapters of 1,500 to 3,000 words. Debuts tend to sit in the middle of that range. Shorter, tighter books suit psychological suspense, while conspiracy and espionage plots may need more room. We set the target at outline stage so the pacing matches it. More on Suspense and Thriller Writing
What is the difference between a thriller and a suspense novel?
Suspense focuses on anxiety and anticipation, often with ordinary people in dangerous situations. Thrillers emphasize action, high stakes and pursuit. Many books mix them, and the labels overlap on retail shelves. We discuss which emphasis you want, then shape tone, pacing and chapter hooks to deliver it. More on Suspense and Thriller Writing
Can you write a domestic or psychological thriller with an unreliable narrator?
Yes. These books demand careful control of what the narrator hides and when the reader learns it. We plan each deception, plant matching clues, and test that a second read feels fair. We also check the ending against the early chapters so nothing contradicts the reveal. More on Suspense and Thriller Writing
Will you keep my plot twist secret?
Yes. We sign an NDA on request before you share it, limit access to the project, and never reuse or publish your material. Only you receive drafts. Ownership of the plot, characters and finished text transfers to you on delivery, and you are the only credited author. More on Suspense and Thriller Writing
Can you continue my unfinished thriller?
Yes. Send the chapters you have and any notes. We read them, flag plot problems, and propose an outline for the remaining chapters. Your original voice is preserved, and we write the rest to match. Nothing in your existing pages is changed unless you approve it. More on Suspense and Thriller Writing
How long is a mystery novel?
Cozy mysteries usually run 60,000 to 80,000 words, and police procedurals or private-eye novels 80,000 to 100,000. Shorter novellas of 30,000 to 45,000 words suit series built on quick cases. We confirm the length at outline stage so the number of suspects and clues fits the page count. More on Mystery and Crime Writing
Can you plan the whole mystery plot if I only have an idea?
Yes. Give us the setting, the victim, and any twist you like, and we propose a culprit, suspects, clues and red herrings for approval. You change what you want before any chapters are written. Your approved outline becomes the blueprint the draft follows. More on Mystery and Crime Writing
What is a cozy mystery, and can you write one?
A cozy mystery has an amateur sleuth, a close-knit community, little graphic violence and a satisfying resolution, often with a hobby, food or pet theme. Yes, we write them, including series. Tell us your setting and hobby angle and we develop the cast and the first case. More on Mystery and Crime Writing
Will my solution be too easy to guess?
We test for that. During outlining we check how many clues point to the culprit, how many mislead, and where the reader would need to notice something to guess early. We balance the two so careful readers feel clever but not certain until the reveal. More on Mystery and Crime Writing
Do you write crime fiction with legal and police accuracy?
Yes. We research investigative procedure, evidence handling, charges and court process for your jurisdiction, and mark anything uncertain for you to confirm. If you have professional experience, we use your input. Fiction can compress reality for pace, but we avoid errors that would pull a knowledgeable reader out of the book. More on Mystery and Crime Writing
How many pages is a comic book script?
A standard single issue has 20 to 24 story pages, with four to six panels per page on average. A graphic novel runs 80 to 150 pages or more. We plan the page count at the outline stage so the story is sized correctly and the printed issue fits your publishing format. More on Comic Book Writing
Do you provide the artwork as well?
No. We write the script, outline and series plan. Pencilling, inking, coloring and lettering come from the artists you hire, and we can advise on what to include in your brief for them. If you want help approaching illustrators, ask and we will discuss how to proceed. More on Comic Book Writing
Can you adapt my novel into a comic or graphic novel?
Yes. Adaptation means selecting the scenes that carry your plot, compressing long passages into visual beats and rewriting dialogue for balloons. We prepare an adaptation outline first, showing which chapters become which issues. You approve it, then we write the pages. More on Comic Book Writing
What script format do you use?
We use full script format by default, numbered by page and panel with clear action description, dialogue and caption lines. If your artist prefers plot-first scripts or a particular layout, tell us and we adapt. Consistency helps letterers and editors, so we keep one format through the series. More on Comic Book Writing
Can you write superhero, horror or slice-of-life comics?
Yes. We write across genres, including superhero, horror, fantasy, science fiction, crime and slice-of-life. Each has its own pacing and visual language, and we match the writer to your genre. Send reference titles and we use them to set tone, panel density and dialogue style. More on Comic Book Writing
Editing & Formatting
What type of book editing do I need?
It depends on the state of your draft. A rough first draft usually needs a developmental edit. A solid draft with uneven prose suits a line edit. A polished manuscript needs a copyedit. Send a sample and your word count, and we will recommend the right level honestly, even if the answer is a smaller service than you expected. More on Book Editing
Will an editor rewrite my book?
No. An editor improves what you wrote and explains why. A developmental edit suggests changes, which you carry out. Line edits adjust sentences while preserving your voice. We do not take authorship or credit, and you keep all rights to your work. Every change is visible and reversible, so the final decision on each one stays with you. More on Book Editing
How long does it take to edit a book?
A copyedit of an average novel often takes two to three weeks. Developmental edits take longer because the editor reads the whole book carefully before writing the letter. Timelines depend on length and the current schedule, so we confirm a firm date when you approve the scope, and we tell you early if anything changes. More on Book Editing
Can I see a sample before I commit?
Yes. We edit a short passage from your manuscript so you can judge the quality of the marks and comments. It also lets us assess how much work the text needs, which keeps the quote accurate and prevents you from buying a service you do not need. There is no obligation to continue after the sample. More on Book Editing
Is my manuscript kept confidential?
Yes. Your manuscript is shared only with the editor assigned to it, and we are happy to sign a non-disclosure agreement before you send it. You keep full ownership of your text and every edit made to it, and nothing is reused or published without your consent. Ask us about any specific concern before you send the file, and we will answer it in writing. More on Book Editing
Do I need a developmental edit if my beta readers liked the book?
Not always. Beta readers are good at telling you how a book felt, but less reliable at naming why a scene or chapter fails. If they finished the book and could summarize the plot and characters accurately, you may only need a line edit and copyedit. If their feedback was vague or mixed, a developmental edit is worth considering. More on Book Editing
What is the difference between proofreading and copyediting?
Copyediting is a deeper pass that fixes grammar, usage, clarity, and consistency, and it queries facts and wording. Proofreading comes last and only corrects remaining errors in text that is already final. If your manuscript has not been edited, you probably need a copyedit first, and we will advise you honestly, even if that means a different service from the one you asked about. More on Book Proofreading
Do you proofread the manuscript or the formatted proof?
We can do either. Many authors choose the typeset proof because layout creates its own errors, like orphaned headings and bad line breaks. If your budget allows only one pass, proofreading the final formatted proof usually gives the most protection before publication. If you do both, the second pass is much faster because the text is already clean. More on Book Proofreading
Will you change my writing style or voice?
No. Proofreading leaves your voice alone. We fix errors, not style choices. Where a sentence is unclear or awkward, we leave a comment and let you decide. If you want help with style, a line edit is the better service, and we can offer that separately. Every change appears as a tracked mark, so you always see what was touched. More on Book Proofreading
Which style guide do you follow?
For US trade books we usually follow the Chicago Manual of Style, with Merriam-Webster for spelling. Academic or journalistic work may use APA or AP instead. We agree the choice with you first and record every decision on a style sheet so the book stays consistent, including your own preferences where they differ from the guide. More on Book Proofreading
How long does proofreading a book take?
A typical full-length book takes several days to two weeks, depending on word count and how clean the text is. Longer or more complex books take more time. We give a firm delivery date with your quote, and rush scheduling is sometimes possible if you ask early and can send the final file promptly. Rush slots depend on our schedule. More on Book Proofreading
Can a proofreader guarantee my book has no typos?
No honest proofreader can promise that. Careful reading removes the great majority of errors, but a few can survive in any book, including books from large publishers. We use a style sheet, a full line-by-line read, and a verification of your accepted changes to keep that number as low as possible, and we correct anything we missed. More on Book Proofreading
How much do book formatting services cost?
The cost depends on length, trim size, and complexity, such as images, tables, or footnotes. A plain novel is simpler than an illustrated cookbook. Send your word count and the formats you need, and we will quote a fixed fee before any work starts, so nothing changes after you approve it. The quote states which files you receive and how many correction rounds it covers. More on Book Formatting
What file should I send my manuscript in?
Send a Word document (.docx) or a Google Docs export of your final, edited text. Using heading styles for chapter titles helps but is not required, because we clean the file during intake. Please avoid sending a PDF, since it cannot be converted back to editable text reliably. Send images as separate full-size files, not only pasted into the document. More on Book Formatting
Do I need separate files for Kindle and print?
Yes, you need both. Ebooks reflow to fit any screen, while a print interior has fixed pages, margins, and page numbers. We build both from one master layout, so the styling matches. You then upload the EPUB or KPF to ebook stores and the PDF to your print-on-demand account. If you only want one format today, the other can be added later. More on Book Formatting
Can you format a book for both KDP and IngramSpark?
Yes. The two platforms have slightly different file requirements, so we can export a version for each. Many authors use KDP for Amazon and IngramSpark for wider bookstore and library distribution. Tell us your plan at the start and we will prepare the right files together. The interior is often the same, but cover files and ISBN handling usually differ, and we flag those. More on Book Formatting
How long does book formatting take?
Most novels and memoirs take about one to two weeks after we receive the final manuscript, depending on length and our schedule. Heavily illustrated books or those with many tables take longer. We confirm a delivery date when you approve the quote and keep you updated, and your own review time is not counted against us. More on Book Formatting
Should I format my book before or after editing?
Format after editing and proofreading are finished. Every text change made after layout can shift pages, strand a heading, or break the table of contents. Small corrections are easy to make, but a new chapter or a heavy rewrite means setting that section again. That is why we ask for your final text before we start the full layout. More on Book Formatting
Can I use machine translation for my book?
Machine tools are useful for rough understanding but are not reliable for publication. They miss tone, idiom, and cultural context, and errors can make a book look careless. A native translator reading for meaning and style produces text readers can enjoy, which is what matters for sales and reputation. Some translators use software as a first aid, but the judgment stays human. More on Book Translation
How long does it take to translate a book?
A professional translator typically handles a few thousand words a day, so a full-length novel often takes two to four months including review. Shorter books are faster. We confirm a delivery date with your quote based on length, language, and genre complexity, and poetry or heavily idiomatic prose usually needs more time than plain nonfiction. More on Book Translation
Do I keep the rights to the translated book?
Yes, as long as you hold the rights to the original work. You keep the rights and royalties to the translated edition, and you publish through your own retailer accounts. If a publisher holds translation rights under an existing contract, check that before you begin, since you cannot license what you no longer control. Rights questions are easiest to settle before translation starts. More on Book Translation
Do I need a new ISBN for a translated edition?
Yes. A translation counts as a new edition, and each format needs its own ISBN. In the US, ISBNs are bought through Bowker. Retailers also need the title, description, and keywords in the new language, and we can help prepare them for your listing. Your original ISBNs stay with the original edition. If you use a free retailer ISBN, check which platforms it restricts. More on Book Translation
Which languages do you translate into?
Common requests include Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, and Arabic, plus translation from other languages into English. Availability depends on genre, so we confirm it when you request a quote. If we cannot staff a language well, we will tell you instead of taking the project and hoping for the best. Rare or less common languages may take longer to staff. More on Book Translation
Should I translate the title and cover too?
Often yes. A title that works in English can fall flat or mean something unintended in another language, so the translator and you should agree on one. Covers usually need the title replaced, and some markets prefer different imagery or type styles. We can coordinate the title with the cover design and format steps so everything matches at launch. More on Book Translation
Publishing & Design
What do book publishing services include?
We prepare and upload your book to print and ebook platforms, register ISBNs, write metadata, set pricing, and order a proof copy. Everything is published under your own accounts, so you keep the rights and royalties. Editing, cover design, and formatting are available as separate services if you need them, and we can quote the full package together. More on Book Publishing
Will I own my ISBN and my rights?
Yes. You remain the rights holder, and we register your ISBN under your name or imprint if you buy your own. Royalties are paid by the retailer directly to you. We take no share of sales and do not ask you to assign rights to us. If you leave, your files, accounts, and ISBN go with you. More on Book Publishing
Should I use KDP, IngramSpark, or both?
KDP is simple and reaches Amazon readers. IngramSpark opens bookstores and libraries to your title. Many authors use both for print, and decide on ebook exclusivity separately. We explain the trade-offs during planning so you choose based on your goals, not a template. You can also begin with one and add the other later. We recommend nothing before hearing your goals. More on Book Publishing
How long does it take to publish a book?
With finished files, setup and upload usually take about a week, plus proof shipping time. Retailer review adds a few days, and print listings can take longer to appear. If you still need editing, cover, or formatting, those stages add time, and we give a schedule up front so you can plan a release date. More on Book Publishing
Can you guarantee my book will sell?
No, and anyone who does is not being honest. We make sure your book is listed correctly, looks professional, and is available in the right formats. Sales depend on the book, the market, and promotion. We can help with marketing as a separate service if you want support, and we report what works as we learn it. More on Book Publishing
Do I need to register a copyright to publish?
No. Copyright exists once you create the work, and you do not need registration to publish. In the US, registering with the Copyright Office gives added legal advantages if you ever need to enforce your rights, and some authors choose to do it. We can walk you through the process, but we are not a law firm and cannot give legal advice. More on Book Publishing
What do I need to provide for a book cover design?
We need your title, subtitle, author name, back cover text, and a short description of the book and its readers. Examples of covers you like help a great deal. For print, we also need your final page count and trim size, since they set the spine width. Any series plans or author photo requests help too. More on Book Cover Design
What size should a paperback cover be?
It depends on trim size, page count, and paper type, because the spine width changes with them. A 6x9 book with 300 pages has a different total width than one with 200 pages. We calculate it with the printer's formula and add 0.125 inch bleed on all sides, then check it against the printer's own template. More on Book Cover Design
What size should an ebook cover be?
Kindle recommends a height-to-width ratio of 1.6 to 1, with 2560 by 1600 pixels being a common choice, saved as JPEG or TIFF. Other retailers have similar guidelines. We deliver the correct files for each platform and check the requirements again at the start of the project, since retailer rules do change. Platforms may also resize it for display. More on Book Cover Design
How many revisions are included?
Revision rounds are included in your quote and defined in writing before we start. Small adjustments to color, type, and layout are covered. A completely new concept after approval is treated as a new project. We keep the process clear so you are never surprised by extra costs partway through. Ask about this before you start. More on Book Cover Design
Can you design a cover for a series?
Yes. We create a consistent system of layout, type, and color so the books look related while each title stays distinct. It also makes future covers faster to produce, and it helps readers recognize your books on a retailer page or in a store. Series templates are best planned before the first cover is final. More on Book Cover Design
Can I use my own artwork or photo on the cover?
Yes, if you hold the rights to it and the resolution is high enough for print, generally 300 dpi at the final size. We will check the file, tell you honestly if it is too small or too busy for a thumbnail, and either build the design around it or suggest alternatives. Please send the original file, not a screenshot. More on Book Cover Design
Do book marketing services guarantee sales?
No. No honest provider can promise sales, rankings, reviews, or bestseller status, because results depend on the book, the genre, and reader response. We improve the things we can control, such as listing quality, targeting, and consistency, and we report results transparently, including when something we tried did not work. Be cautious of any promise that sounds certain. More on Book Marketing
What is the first thing I should fix to sell more books?
Start with the cover, title, and description on your sales page, since readers decide within seconds. Then check categories and keywords. These changes cost little, and they make every other form of promotion work better. We usually begin with this kind of audit before suggesting any paid advertising at all. Fixing these first also stops you paying to send readers to a weak page. More on Book Marketing
Do I need an author email list?
Yes, ideally. Retailers and social platforms control their own audiences and can change their rules. An email list lets you reach readers directly when you release a new book. We help you set up a signup page, a welcome email, and a simple plan to grow it with a reader magnet. Subscribers also tend to buy more readily than cold traffic. More on Book Marketing
Are Amazon Ads worth it for a new author?
They can be, but only after your listing converts well, and they need testing. Start with a small daily budget, watch cost per click and royalties earned, and adjust. We set up campaigns with clear rules so you do not overspend while learning what works, and we review the numbers with you. We never promise results from advertising. More on Book Marketing
Can you help me get book reviews?
We help you find honest readers through advance copies, launch teams, and genre bloggers. We do not buy, trade, or fabricate reviews, and retailers prohibit them. We cannot promise any number of reviews, but a good book properly introduced does tend to collect them over time. Be skeptical of anyone selling guaranteed reviews, because that is the pattern retailers act against. More on Book Marketing
How much time will marketing take each week?
Most authors can keep a basic plan going in two to four hours a week: one email to your list, a few social posts, and a quick look at ad results and your listing. Launch weeks take more. We build the plan around the time you actually have, so you can keep it up month after month. More on Book Marketing
What should an author website include?
At minimum: a home page, a books page with retailer links, an about page, a contact page, and an email signup form. A press kit with bios, headshots, and cover images is helpful for media and event hosts. Add a blog only if you will keep it current, since stale posts hurt more than they help. More on Author Website
Do I own the domain and website?
Yes. We register or connect your domain in your name and set up hosting in an account you control. Logins are handed over at launch, so you can move or manage the site at any time without our involvement. If you ever change designers, nothing needs to be rescued from us. Renewals go to your own email. More on Author Website
Do I need a website if I have social media?
Yes, because social platforms change rules and reach without notice, and you do not own those audiences. A website gives readers a stable place to find your books and join your email list. Social profiles can then point to it, and your site stays searchable long after a post has disappeared. Do both, with the website as home base. More on Author Website
Will the website help my book rank on Google?
It helps readers find you, especially when they search your name or book title, and we set up the basics: titles, descriptions, headings, and a sitemap. We cannot promise rankings, because search results depend on many factors outside any designer's control, including competition and how often the site is updated. We also keep pages fast and mobile-friendly, which helps readers and search. More on Author Website
Can I update the site myself?
Yes. We build the site so you can edit text, add books, and change retailer links without coding. A short written guide comes with the handover. If you would prefer not to touch it, we can handle updates for a separate fee, and we agree the scope in writing first. A short walkthrough call is part of the handover. More on Author Website
How long does it take to build an author website?
A standard author site usually takes two to four weeks from the day we have your content, covers, and bios. Delays almost always come from waiting on text or images, so gathering those early helps. We confirm a schedule at the start, and a launch tied to a book release is planned backward from that date. More on Author Website
What are the ACX audio requirements?
ACX asks for 192 kbps constant bitrate MP3 at 44.1 kHz, with overall loudness between minus 23 and minus 18 dB RMS, peaks below minus 3 dB, and a noise floor of minus 60 dB RMS or lower. Each chapter is a separate file with room tone, and each stays under 120 minutes. Files that miss any of these are rejected. More on Audiobook Production
How long does it take to produce an audiobook?
A rule of thumb is that one finished hour takes several hours of recording and editing. A typical novel might take six to ten weeks from casting through mastering, depending on narrator availability and length. We confirm a schedule in writing before recording begins, and your review time for early chapters is built into it. More on Audiobook Production
Should I narrate my own audiobook?
You can, and some authors do it well, especially for memoir or nonfiction. It requires a quiet, treated space, stamina, and consistent technique across many hours. We can arrange a test recording so you hear the result and decide before committing to the whole book. Fiction with many characters is usually harder to narrate alone. More on Audiobook Production
Do I keep the rights to my audiobook?
Yes. You hold your audio rights and publish through your own ACX or other retailer account, so royalties are paid directly to you. Your choice of exclusive or non-exclusive distribution affects royalty rates and where you can sell, and we explain the trade-offs before you sign anything. We do not take a share of your audio royalties or ask for any assignment of rights. More on Audiobook Production
How many words is an hour of audiobook?
Narrators typically read about 9,000 to 10,000 words per finished hour, so an 80,000-word novel runs roughly eight to nine hours. This estimate drives production time and narrator fees. We calculate it from your actual manuscript when preparing your quote, since dialogue-heavy and technical books read at different speeds. Use it for rough planning only. More on Audiobook Production
Can I turn my ebook into an audiobook without recording equipment?
Yes. You do not need any equipment, because the narrator records in their own treated space and we handle editing and mastering. Your part is to supply the final manuscript, confirm pronunciations, listen to early chapters, and approve the finished files. Please send the final edited text, since changes after recording mean costly re-recording. We will remind you before recording starts. More on Audiobook Production
What is a book review consultation?
It is a professional assessment of your manuscript followed by a discussion of your options. You receive a written report on structure, pacing, voice, and genre fit, plus a call to talk through next steps. It helps you decide what to fix before publishing or submitting, and what to leave alone. It is advice, not editing. More on Book Review & Consultation
Is a manuscript assessment the same as editing?
No. An assessment diagnoses the manuscript and recommends actions, but we do not change your text. Editing then carries out the fixes. Many authors start with an assessment because it shows which type of editing they need, and prevents paying for the wrong one. It is a smaller, earlier step than a developmental edit. The two fit together well. More on Book Review & Consultation
Will you give me honest feedback even if it is negative?
Yes. Honest feedback is the entire point. We point out strengths so you know what to keep, and we state problems clearly with examples. We deliver criticism respectfully, but we will not inflate praise, because that would leave you no better prepared. If the book is close to ready, we will say that just as plainly. More on Book Review & Consultation
Can you get me reviews on Amazon?
We do not sell or arrange paid reviews, and retailers prohibit them. We can advise on legitimate routes such as advance reader copies, launch teams, and genre bloggers. No honest provider can promise a number of reviews or a particular rating, and buying them risks removed reviews or a closed account. Retailers can remove reviews they suspect were bought. More on Book Review & Consultation
How long does a manuscript review take?
Most reports take one to three weeks after we receive the full manuscript, depending on its length and our schedule. The consultation call is booked after you have read the report. We confirm timing when you approve the quote, and shorter manuscripts are faster. Tell us about any deadline when you ask for the quote. More on Book Review & Consultation
Should I get an assessment before or after beta readers?
After is usually better. Beta readers show you how ordinary readers respond, and you can then revise the problems they found. An assessment after that round catches deeper issues of structure and market fit that casual readers cannot name. If you have no beta readers, an assessment can serve as your first outside opinion instead. More on Book Review & Consultation
